In the UK, we a lucky to have the NHS to look after us if we have an accident or become ill. This is something that we do not pay for directly, so we can continue our daily business without worrying about it. When we go abroad, we may not get this safety net in every country that we go to. There are also other dangers that we face, as we are no longer in the safety of our homes and are in unfamiliar surroundings. Most of the time our holidays are very enjoyable but travel insurance is there for those minority of times that it does not go to plan. Different policies will cover you for different situations but the main areas are:

Medical Conditions
Having to pay medical expenses abroad can be very expensive; especially in countries like the USA. The UK does have agreements with certain countries that means that you will receive similar treatment as you would have in the UK, with no additional cost to you. It is important to check before you travel.

Travel insurance can cover these medical expenses while abroad but it is important to note that they will not cover pre-existing medical conditions. It is important to disclose these on the application form. Some conditions may be covered, while others may result in a higher receive similar treatment as you would have in the UK, with no additional cost to you. It is important to check before you travel.

Countries Covered
Most policies will charge you by the countries that are covered. These are usually divided by Europe, Worldwide excluding USA and Worldwide including USA.

Annual or Single Policies and Duration
If you are unlikely to travel very often in a year, then a Travel Insurance policy for a single trip may be suitable for you. However, if you are likely to make multiple short trips within a year, then it would generally be more cost effective to take an annual policy.

The majority of policies will only cover you for a trip of up to 30 days, with start and finishing location being the UK. There are some companies that have longer maximum durations, sometimes 60 days. If you wish to make a trip that is longer than this, then you will need to take a specialist policy.

Other Options
Most policies will have various exclusions but will have the option to add cover for certain activities. The main additions are for "winter sports", "business travel" and dangerous activities, such as bungee jumping.

It is very important to check the policy wording of your policy to ensure that it covers everything that is important to you.
