If you drive a vehicle in the UK, you will need to have it insured. While it is a legal requirement to insure your vehicle, you still have various options available to you. You can shop around for the cheapest premium or look for a high level of cover. There are three main types of motor insurance:
Third Party Insurance
The law requires this as a minimum. It is purely there to insure against any damage or injuries that you cause to someone else or their property. It will not pay anything for any damage or injury to you or your vehicle.
Third Party, Fire and Theft Insurance
This covers the same as above but has the added protection of insuring your vehicle against being stolen and being damaged by fire.
Comprehensive Insurance
This is the most expensive option but provides a more rounded level of protection. It covers the above but also covers damage to your own vehicle that is a result of your own fault. This is a valuable benefit that gives you more peace of mind than the other two options.
No Claims Discount (NCD):
In addition to the premium quotes by the company, you will be able to get a discount based on the number of years that you have not claimed on your insurance. This is to reward safe drivers. It is possible to transfer the number of years of No Claims Discount that you have accumulated to another company. It is even possible to "protect" your No Claim Discount. |
